Eyes are the mirror of the soul
Why do we say that the eyes are the "mirror of the soul"? Because our eyes can reflect our feelings and state of mind. They can express intelligence, attention or lucidity. This is why eyes are associated with the inner essence of our being: with something deep inside us, something that goes beyond all else. The look in the eyes of people in love is so intense that it goes way beyond the heat of the moment. In this context, the hypnotic phrase "look into my eyes" would emphasise their vulnerability, and even indicate a possible lack of self-control or ability to choose.
Eyes in ancient cultures
The eye is a symbol that you can find in practically every culture. In ancient times, an open eye without an eyelid was the symbol of transcendent and worldly power, of divinity and spirituality. The god Ra was represented by a fiery eye. Even the God of the Old Testament was represented by a large eye carved in an isosceles triangle. In Eastern philosophies, the third eye was a symbol of second sight, and symbolised intuition and the ability to connect with a higher level of consciousness.
But sometimes eyes were attributed with negative symbology. The Cyclops was a one-eyed monster: this symbolised a lack of light and therefore a limited and uncultivated awareness. Wicked glances were defined as the evil eye and could convey hate, envy and threats just with a look.
Eyes in dreams
The image of an eye reoccurs frequently in dreams. The eyes, and an intense stare in particular, symbolise a desire to look inside oneself, to clarify a situation, to understand how things really are or to ascertain other people's intentions. Vice versa, a gaze can indicate ingenuity and innocence, and symbolises the part of us that would like to remain a child. The colour of eyes in dreams is extremely symbolic. Blue is the colour of looking at your inner self or discovering divinity, whilst dark eyes are associated with reality. Dreaming of blindness or blind people can symbolise an inability to see something that affects us closely or denial of an event that involves us.
Iridology: reading eyes*
Man has always been fascinated by eyes, and by their ability to convey a person's emotions and life force. So over time a practice has been developed that claims a link between the eyes and the body's state of health. Iridology is the study of our body's predisposition to manifesting mental and physical disorders and involves careful examination of the iris. The markings of the iris have been mapped out and iridologists compare their findings with these charts. Markings and patterns of colour in certain areas of the iris correspond to certain organs in the body and their respective predisposition to diseases.
Eyes and emotional wellbeing *
The nervous system constantly sends a series of impulses to the eye. If there are any problems, these signals appear on the iris in the form of markings, cracks or rings of varying densities and colours. The pupil in particular conveys any emotional ailments. Apparently a serious disappointment in love can distort the outline of the pupil, which would only become round again when the pain had passed.
The foundations of iridology*
Iridology bases its diagnoses on the study of three specific pointers. Colours: assessing the fundamental colours of the iris: blue, grey, green, hazel, brown, and dark brown. Patterns: observing any distortion of the iris: dots, rings and cracks. Markings and discolorations: shades of colour in certain areas of the iris indicate significant changes in the corresponding organs.
Eyes and the psyche*
Iridology also draws attention to a person's psychological and emotional states. Movements of the pupil provide the foundations for a complex language that conveys messages through the eyes, even without us knowing. When we speak to somebody, dilated pupils show that we are interested, paying attention and willing to interact. Further readings can be conducted by analysing the rim of the pupil.
*Iridology is not recognised by mainstream medicine. We recommend caution and suggest visiting only qualified practitioners (naturopaths, homeopaths), and consulting a specialist in the event of any illness.
